Eye Vitamins for Macular Degeneration
By Paul Krawitz of Vitamin Science, Inc.
Vitamin Science, Inc. is a specialty formulator and manufacturer of nutritional supplement eye vitamins for the treatment and prevention of age-related macular degeneration. Research by the United States National Eye Institute and others has proven the benefit of high dose nutritional supplements in the promotion of macular health and ocular nutrition. In 2001, the National Eye Institute, one of the United States' National Institutes of Health, published a study that showed, for the first time, that macular degeneration could be slowed or stopped by the oral intake of a particular vitamin mixture. What made the formula unique was the high dosages of ingredients, which were very different from those available in most multivitamins. The study was known as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, with the acronym, AREDS. Since then, subsequent studies, including the Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) have proven that other ingredients not in AREDS are also important. The ongoing research at the National Eye Institute (AREDS2) is now evaluating the benefit of adding lutein and zeaxanthin, adding omega-3 essential fatty acids and the removal of beta-carotene. VisiVite.Com has several eye formulas which can help the patient's eye doctor to customize a nutritional solution based upon the medical needs and avoidance of side effects.
